Ovarian Rejuvenation: A new era in fertility treatment

Ovarian Rejuvenation: A new era in fertility treatment

For many women facing age-related fertility decline, the idea of restoring ovarian function was once thought impossible. However, new era of scientific advancements in fertility are changing that reality.

In this read, we look into a recent study on Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, revealing statistically significant improvement in ovarian function. Positive results were observed as early as one month after the therapy began, with sustained benefits over the long term.

The recent study [Éliás, M. et al., 2024] published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology was based on results of PRP ovarian treatment from 2,256 women up until March 2024. It was found that the level of AMH (Anti-Müllerian hormone*) raised, the level of FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone**) decreased significantly after the PRP treatment. Additionally, it was established that PRP injections increased AFC (antral follicle count***) and enhanced ovarian response, suggesting a positive impact on fertility potential (ovarianresearch.biomedcentral.com).

Terminology

*Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the ovaries. It plays a role in the development of eggs and helps to assess a woman’s ovarian reserve. Higher AMH levels often suggest a good ovarian reserve, while lower levels indicate fewer eggs.

**Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that helps regulate the reproductive processes, including the growth of eggs in women. High FSH levels can indicate a lower ovarian reserve, while lower FSH levels typically suggest better ovarian function.

***Antral follicle count (AFC) is a test that measures the number of small follicles in the ovaries using ultrasound. These follicles contain immature eggs and indicate ovarian reserve. A higher AFC generally suggests a better ovarian reserve and a higher chance of fertility therapy success, while a lower AFC indicate fewer available eggs.

Ovarian PRP

At Life Clinic, we provide ovarian rejuvenation therapies for individuals seeking to improve their reproductive health.

Understanding Ovarian Rejuvenation

Ovarian rejuvenation encompasses a range of medical therapies focused on revitalizing ovarian function. These treatments are particularly beneficial for women experiencing diminished ovarian reserve, premature ovarian insufficiency, or those approaching menopause. By stimulating tissue repair and follicle development, ovarian rejuvenation aims to enhance egg quality and overall fertility potential.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

One of the most studied treatments in ovarian rejuvenation is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. This procedure involves extracting a small amount of the patient’s blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting this enriched plasma directly into the ovarian tissue. The growth factors present in PRP are believed to promote tissue regeneration and stimulate ovarian function.

Further research

Other recent studies are also providing compelling evidence supporting the effectiveness of PRP therapy including:

  • Enhanced Ovarian Reserve Markers: (Fraidakis M. et al, 2023) A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in 2023 found that PRP injections effectively increased ovarian reserve markers, improved ovarian angiogenesis, and contributed to follicle formation and menstrual cycle recovery (frontiersin.org).
  • Hormonal Balance Restoration: (Fathi, M. et al., 2023) Research published in Cureus in 2023 demonstrated that intraovarian PRP injections led to a significant reduction in Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) levels, indicating a restoration of hormonal balance (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

Is Ovarian Rejuvenation Right for You?

Ovarian rejuvenation may be suitable for women who:

  • Have been diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency or diminished ovarian reserve.
  • Are approaching menopause but wish to conceive.
  • Have had limited success with traditional fertility treatments.

Do remember that a consultation with a fertility specialist is always required in order to determine whether this therapy or other fertility treatment is the right course of action for you bearing in mind your current fertility status and family planning goals.
