Miscarriage matters! Gone are the days of ‘just keep trying’

Miscarriage is generally defined as the loss of a pregnancy before viability. An estimated 23 million miscarriages occur every year worldwide, translating to 44 pregnancy losses each minute. It is the most common complication of pregnancy and an estimated 1 in 5 women experience this heartbreak and suffer untold emotional and physical consequences. 

The era of just telling women ‘to keep trying‘ after a miscarriage, is over. A report in The Lancet (May 2021) describes in detail the current outlook for women experiencing single or recurrent miscarriage and how miscarriage needs to be more accurately diagnosed with appropriate investigations.

Miscarriage, and especially recurrent miscarriage, is also a prominent risk marker for obstetric complications, including preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, placental abruption, and stillbirth in future pregnancies
